We've all had one of those days when we tipped over wine on our favorite dress, split a cup of coffee or dropped ketchup on ourselves while eating French fries and ended up with a huge scary stain. Before you panic, curse yourself or rush to the nearest store or website to replace the stained clothing, know that there are simple, easy & quick remedies that will help you get rid of your stains from the comfort of your home.
What if we told you that you don't even need to rush to the dry cleaners to remove the stain and can fix the stain with regular household products like vinegar, baking soda, salt & lemon.
Fortunately, most stains have a few things in common and it's quite easy to remember as well. First — the earlier you can start attending to a stain, the better as the less time the stain has to soak — the easier it will be to remove. Second, try removing as much as you can by removing any excess by running the said stained area under water or blotting it with a damp cloth. Lastly, remember to make sure the stain is completely gone before putting it in the dryer as the heat in the dryer could cause the stain to set & get permanent.
Here are a few ways to tackle the most common stains that at some point have left you scarred.
Using baking soda on a coffee stain is one of the easiest ways to get rid of the stain but did you know you can also use salt to keep the stain at bay? Just grab some salt & sprinkle it generously on the stain — remember the more salt you put, the more likely it is to go deeper into the fabric of your clothing. Leave the salt on the stain for a minute and then gently rub away with a cloth.
It's a tad bit difficult to remove a red wine stain as compared to other stains. It requires immediate attention to avoid letting it become a permanent part of your fabric. Apply white vinegar directly onto the red wine stain followed by a few drops of liquid detergent, in case you don’t have liquid detergent — you can use a few drops of liquid dish washing soap. Leave the mixture on for a few minutes and then wash your clothing in hot water.
Before the stain dries, try scraping the stain. Put the stain under cold running water and rub dish soap onto the stain in a circular motion. Rinse the soap with water after two minutes and blot the stained area gently with a cloth.
To get rid of sweat stains, make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply a substantial amount of this paste to the stain and let it stay for at least an hour and then put this in for a wash. If the stains are still there after the wash, try using bleach and drying the cloth in the sun inverted inside out.
Mix a cup of alcohol with a cup of vinegar. Place the garment on a flat surface and apply the solution to the stain with a spray bottle or cloth till the stain is completely saturated. Leave the solution to soak in for 5 minutes, then put salt all over the stained area.
Left the iron on your clothes for too long? You can save yourself from permanent damage to your clothes by soaking a cotton ball or cloth in vinegar and dabbing at the stain. Blot this stain with a dry cloth which will lift the stain. Depending on the severity of the stain, you would need to repeat this process until the stain disappears.
If you're someone who constantly gets themselves into situations that require you to keep finding ways to get stains out of your clothes, try keeping a pack of wet tissues in your purse or car so that you can at least pre-treat the stain so that it doesn’t leave a permanent mark on your clothing. Because after all, prevention is better than cure.
